Administration officials disclosed the initiation of federal worker terminations on the end of the week, following through on prior threats linked to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is now poised to extend into its third consecutive week.

Official Announcement and Initial Details

The director of the White House budget office wrote on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the official procedure for terminating staff.

While Vought did not specify which agencies were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson noted that layoffs would take place at the CISA. Moreover, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Labor Reaction and Legal Challenges

Union leaders warned that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by millions of Americans and pledged to challenge the actions in court.

This is shameful that the government has used the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire numerous employees who provide critical services to communities nationwide,” stated a national union president, who leads the American Federation of Government Employees.

The largest labor federation in the US responded to the news, declaring, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Lawmakers from the Democratic party have refused to support a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. Following repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is not expected to be resolved before then.

During a press conference, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican bill, which was approved in the House on a largely partisan basis.

Judicial and Practical Limits

Impact on Workers

The layoffs occurred on the same day that government employees received only a incomplete payment covering the final days of September but excluding the beginning of October, since funding expired at the start of the month.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s impact on government workers.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our leaders in Congress and the administration have failed to keep our government running,” Stier said. The flight regulators, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not responsible for this government shutdown.”

The irony is that members of Congress and top administration officials are continuing to be paid during the shutdown.
