Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People using these drugs need to be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to starting weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

The injections imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have come off the medication report a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a switch flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," described one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
