Teacher Killed and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at School in Nigeria

Armed conflict at learning center
Learning centers in Nigeria's northern region have often been targeted for weapon-wielding factions

Gun-wielding individuals have taken the life of an instructor and kidnapped no fewer than 25 pupils in an raid targeting a girls' secondary school in north-western Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.

The armed faction stormed the public educational institution for female students in Kebbi State's Maga area at around 4 AM local time on the beginning of the work week, authorities reported.

The assailants "exchanged fire with security forces on duty in a firefight" before climbing over the boundary wall and abducting the learners from their dormitory, authorities disclosed.

A school employee was fatally shot while defending the students. An additional employee received firearm injuries and is now receiving treatment.

Eyewitnesses described a large group of attackers, referred to locally as criminal elements, who came shooting randomly to cause panic.

Community members disclosed to media that the armed men then led a group of female students into nearby bushland.

The law enforcement confirmed they had positioned "additional police tactical units, alongside military personnel and vigilante groups" to the area.

A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and suspected escape routes.

In the last several years, schools in northern Nigeria have become frequent targets for armed groups, who routinely perform seizures to seek ransom payments or gain negotiating power with authorities.

The attack in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge afflicting the area, causing relatives in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they wait and hope for their children's secure homecoming.

Protection challenge in Nigeria's northern territories has intensified significantly in the past few months, with educational institutions experiencing the greatest impact of the violence.
