Space Traveler Reveals Emotional Distress Following Wave of Harassment After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in the spring, which also featured high-profile passengers.

The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the landing.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Buried Under Misogyny

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – from her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She noted that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

Flight Details

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the edge of space.

The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from different industries.

The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a well-known tech mogul.
