Can You Crack This? That Forgotten Dutch Creation Which Shaped our Modern World
There are numerous candidates for the designation as “planet’s greatest invention.” The wheel. The movable type. The steam engine.
As per a new book, however, that title belongs to the mechanised timber mill conceived through Dutch inventor Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Prior to mechanised cutting, building a simple merchant vessel necessitated around ten lumberjacks working over three months,” writes the author. “Using wind-driven sawmills, the same quantity of cut lumber could be produced in less than seven days.”
Owing to this speedy automated cutter, that turned logs to planks using virtually no human effort, the Dutch were able to construct ships faster than anyone else, which sparked a century of Netherlands maritime, economic and cultural dominance across the continent and the globe.
The First Genuine Industrial Device
The inventor's lumber mill, argues Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial true industrial apparatus.” A windmill turned a gear. One component converted its rotary movement to vertical motion for the saw. Another component changed the rotary motion into a sideway’s motion advancing the timber to the blade. A geared mechanism shifted the log forward a measured step each cycle.
“Each element seemed modest on its own. Corneliszoon’s brilliance lay in how to combine them so they operated in a precisely synchronized order, cutting on every downward stroke while moving on every upward stroke. This constituted an astonishingly intelligent application of basic components.”
