As Beachgoers Fled Violence, Viral Image Shows Beach Patrol Sprinting ‘Pedal to the Metal’ In the Direction of the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, someone who has spent her entire life as resident of Bondi, describes the iconic coast as her personal space. On that fateful weekend evening, she, along with numerous neighbors, heard pops echoing across the neighbourhood.

“That was the initial assumption, but I considered it was still too bright and no one could see them,” Ching states. Exiting her apartment, she saw people “flooding up Bondi Road”. The looks on display signaled something was wrong.

While standing on the street, talking to a pair who had rushed up the incline still dripping wet, she heard someone moving up from behind. It was a lifeguard, dashing in the direction of Bondi unshod from the adjacent Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while holding a life-saving kit.

“I caught a voice saying ‘excuse me’, and turning my head I just saw this blur of blue,” she recounts. “He was just flying past. He was the only one running in the opposite way that everyone was trying to get away from, while holding that sizeable pack and without footwear … He’s running into something that certainly every part of you would signal you to go in the opposite direction.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely maximum effort racing.”

A Powerful Moment of Courage Amidst Chaos

The photo Ching captured of the lifeguard, since identified as Jackson Doolan, rapidly circulated as a prime example of moments of valour in the aftermath of the tragic event.

Andy Reid, a fellow lifeguard, says that Doolan, referred to as “Jacko”, ran from Tamarama beach to support the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to help other rescuers, police and medical teams caring for numerous victims.

Local Reaction and Support

Doolan’s story was just one of many to emerge from the neighbourhood, with the lifeguard clubhouse beside the scene of the incident transforming into a makeshift treatment center. It was shared that colleagues were also seen helping out, including rushing into the water to save people needing help.

After the events, statements of support flooded in. An online statement conveyed appreciation for the lifeguards who showed that “compassion will always conquer hatred”.

The team of beach patrol later shared a statement, explaining they were “processing what transpired”.

“We are grateful all for your kind sentiments and encouragement. We are overwhelmed by the care directed at our team,” the team commented. “In time, we will share our stories in the aim that it supports those involved.”

Official Praise

Waverley council, the administrative organization that hires many professional beach safety officers, remarked that the crew acted heroically from the second the shooting commenced through to late that nighttime.

“There have been so many emotional stories, but the viral photo of Jackson Doolan, racing from Tamarama to Bondi with a defibrillator so he could help preserve life is remarkable,” commented a mayor.

“Our lifeguards exhibit dedication every day in ensuring our iconic shores protected for the public, but what we observed on Sunday should be celebrated.

“During this time of sorrow and grapple with the atrocity of this brutal and barbaric act of violence, I think it is vital that we consider just how much good we have seen in the face of such evil.”
